There are many different reasons why a shoplifter steals, but the end result is still the same. Liquor stores need to maintain vigilance with their bottle security to reduce the potential for inventory shrinkage. When faced with bottle locks and other kinds of liquor bottle security, many shoplifters will go somewhere else that is an easier target. This includes underage drinkers that are trying to shoplift alcohol.
A twelve-year-old boy was recently arrested when a neighbor called to report that he was intoxicated. When the police arrived, the boy told them he gets drunk several times a week. The boy’s mother claims to have no knowledge of these incidents or where the alcohol comes from.
More than likely she is either lying and is giving him access to her liquor cabinet, or he has found a store that he can easily steal the liquor from.
Obviously a twelve year old should not be able to walk into a liquor store and buy a bottle of liquor. That means that these minors are prime suspects for stealing the product, since they cannot legally buy it. It doesn’t have to be a twelve-year old causing problems. It can be any underage drinker attempting to steal what they cannot legally buy.
This is one of many scenarios that liquor stores need to be aware of why they are at risk of theft and shoplifting. Liquor bottle security reduces these risks by deterring shoplifters and making it harder to steal.
