There’s no reason to be afraid, these spiders are friendly.  If anyone should have arachnophobia, it should be the shoplifters, not your employees.  I have been in the retail and loss prevention industry for many years, and one of my favorite tools for merchandise protection has to be the Alpha Spider Wrap.  I have encountered employees that have been intimidated by the spider wrap because they didn’t understand how it worked.  Some were just putting it on the items because they were told to, and didn’t have any understanding why they were doing it, and how it functioned.
If you don’t know how these gadgets function, here is a brief explanation: They work in conjunction with a special magnetic key that you use to open or adjust the device.  You place the wires around the merchandise and click it closed.  Next, you just crank the top until it has a snug fit to the merchandise.  If a shoplifter tries to cut the wires to get to the merchandise, a loud alarm sounds.  The last thing the shoplifters want is that kind of attention.  I have actually personally observed shoplifters drop the items and run out of the store when this alarm goes off.  I don’t think most of them expect that to happen, and it’s quite entertaining.
The best way to get to know the product is to first read the instructions, and then kind of play around with it and get to know how it works.  You want to make sure that everyone on your team knows how to use the product, so that they don’t slow down the customer’s shopping experience while they are trying to remove it at the register.  If you have employees that are intimidated by retail anti-theft devices, try to make it fun.  You could show them all how to use the devices, and then have a contest to see who can put the Spider Wrap on an item and take it off the fastest.  This will create healthy competition, and get the employees excited about using the devices.
With the Alpha Spider Wrap, you want to find a balance of keeping the spider wrap tight to the merchandise, but not damaging the package.  I have worked with some people in the past that tighten the wrap too tight, and it crushed part of the package, making it unappealing for customers to purchase.  On the other hand, you want to make sure that it is tight.  People should not be able to remove the spider wrap just by pulling one of the wires over a corner of the package.
There are many retail anti-theft devices on the market today, and it is easy to get overwhelmed.  They aren’t as scary as they seem if you understand how to use them.  Alpha Security has made it easy with this one, and once you know how to use the device, it is a very quick process to place it on merchandise and remove it.  One thing for sure is that if a thief messes with this spider, they will be in for a loud surprise, as its bark is worse than its bite.
